Angel Gomes, who is a member of the England side that won the U17 World Cup yesterday afternoon has a connection to Hendon, in that his Dad used to be with the club.

Gil Gomes was with the club in the early part of the 21st century, mostly with the reserves, but he did make one first team appearance in a 1-1 draw with Wembley in the Middlesex Senior Cup at Claremont Road, in a side that included Gary McCann and Bontcho Guentchev.

Gil also saw success as a youngster as he won the 1991 FIFA World Youth Championship for Portugal as part of a squad that includes Luis Figo, Rui Costa and Joao Pinto. Gil ended his playing days with the likes of Middlewich, Salford and Hyde United.

Angel, who was born in London, has been at Manchester United since he was 13, and became the club's youngest senior debutant since Duncan Edwards in 1953 when he replaced Wayne Rooney for the final two minutes in the last game of the 2016-17 season.

Most of the above information on Angel Gomes, along with more about some other members of the squad can be found on the BBC Website.
