Season 1918/19, Part 3

Hampstead resumed their United Senior League fixtures with a 3-0 win over Catford Southend at the Avenue ground, F.Congreve, E.J.Wright, and G.H. Garlick being the marksmen.

The following game was were at home to league leaders Darracq. The Hendon Advertiser was there to record the meeting as follows: "Hampstead Town were successful in one of the deciding matches of the league season, defeating Darracq, the present leaders, by 2 goals to 1. Hampstead, with 15 points against Darracq's 17, have three games in hand, and are now strong favourites for the cup.

"A great local crowd assembled for this important encounter, and all previous gate records for the season were easily beaten, with a fine win and the locals arousing considerable enthusiasm.

"Darracq led at half-time by one-goal, the result of a penalty kick by their star player, H.J.Sawyer. Hampstead, who dominated their opponents throughout, made determined efforts on resuming, and one of the Darracq defenders deflected an otherwise certain goal by F.Congrave into his own net. Soon after, T.B.Poltock made victory certain with a grand shot from G.H.Garlick's centre.

"Keen local rivalry and interest the meeting of Hampstead and Tufnell Park on the latter club's enclosure (the following week), and a particularly fine game resulted in a win for the home side by one goal to nil." In that match, having missed a penalty, Hampstead were beaten by an "offside goal", but title hopes were still good.

That 1-0 defeat at rivals Tufnell Park was followed by two wins in two days. On Good Friday, the 18th April, Southall were beaten 2-0 away with goals in wach half from Poltock and Allwright. A large travelling support had followed the team to Southall and in return they witnessed was was reported as "the club's best performance of the season".

24 hours later, Wimbledon were beaten 4-3 at the Avenue Ground. Poltock put Hampstead ahead after 5 minutes and C.W.Hayes made it 2-0 shortly afterwards. Wimbledon pulled a goal back straight away and added two more to take a 3-2 interval lead. Two Hampstead players were then injured and since substitues were unheard of in those days the Town were forced to carry on with just nine men. C.W.Hayes equalised with his second of the match and with just 2 minutes to go, G.Congreve hit the winner which put Hampstead on the verge of the title.

Hampstead had just one game left to play, and they only had to gain one point to win the title, and went into their penultimate game, against Great Western Railway at the Avenue Ground on Monday 28th April, having announced the line-up in advance

The match was played under adverse conditions, with the ground having been badly affected by a storm that weekend, but a large crowd turned up. Within twenty minutes, G.H. Garlick fired home following a cross from F. Congreve and fifteen minutes into the second half, Congreve himself netted with an effor of such power that in the words of the local newspaper report, it "actually burst the net".

Hampstead held on for the 2-0 win and became the first and only team to win the Gill-Knight trophy, becoming it's permanant holders since for the following season, football was back.
