Season 1914/15 (World War One), Part 3

City of Westminster visited the Avenue Ground in November in the third round of the London Senior Amateur Cup. The local press covered it as follows:

"A good sporting game resulted in the Town being easy winners by four goals to nil. Three excellent points were registered in the first half by F. Lucas, T. Poltock and O. Warren while such a sound defence was exhibited by W.H. Hooper and C.J. Horbury that the visitors never had a chance of scoring.

In the second period, the home team played a less vigorous game, O.Warren adding one more to the score. The latest members of the club to join the forces are O. Warren and L. Fraser, but their services will be available for the first few weeks of military training."

Another tie followed, this time in the F.A. Cup. The Press take up the story: "No decisive result accrued from the Town's visit to Guildford last Saturday in the 4th Qualifying Round of the F.A. Cup, honours being even at the expiration of ninety minutes play, each side having scored once. Both teams missed excellent chances in the early stages of the game, but after thirty minutes play the Town took the lead, A.W. Humphreys heading through, following a scrimmage in the goalmouth. Guildford equalised shortly after the interval with a fine effort. The Town had a weakened team, and were stronger in defence than in attack. W.H. Hooper and F. Lucas played exceedingly well."

350 turned up at the Avenue for the replay, Hampstead Town winning 2-1. Hooper scored from the spot and H. Spiller got the other goal. In the next round, Hampstead drew Bromley. Meanwhile, another player, L. McCoy Hill had joined the forces in Kitchener's Army. O.A. Warren, mentioned above, was in the H.A.C. and L. Fraser was in the 7th City of London Rifles.

At the end of November and with a depleted team, Hampstead Town visited Page Green Old Boys in the First Round of the Amateur Cup. A.W. Humphreys scored twice for the Town, and later missed a penalty as we went down 4-2. While the professional game at the time was attracting a good deal of unfavourable criticism, and regarded by some as having an adverse effect on recruiting, amateur football seemed likely to be suspended for the opposite reason.

So many players, officials and supporters had joined the forces since the outbreak of war, with 18 members of Hampstead Town responding to their country's call, and each week saw the club witnessing further depletions in the ranks.

At the start of December, Town met Bromley in a well contested and exciting English F.A. Cup 5th Qualifying tie, and the 1-1 score was highly credible. Whereas they placed a very mixed team on the field, the home side were practically at full strength, including such well known amateurs as McWhirter, Peacock, Guthrie, Hill and Hutton.

Losing the toss and facing a strong win and sun, the Town were hard pressed in the first half, and great credit was due to W. Winyard who made many fine saves in goal, and played a sound game throughout according to the press at the time. The shot with which Hutton opened the scoring for Bromley, followed an exciting scrimmage in the Town goal.

The Hampstead forwards played a resourceful game, but owing to the constant re-arrangement necessitated by the current events, lacked the fine combination of their opponents. However, continuing to play with dah and determination in the second period, G.I. Fox equalised with a fine goal just on time. The replay took place a week later at the Avenue Ground. The local paper of the day takes up the story:

"Hampstead Town made their exit from the English Cup competition somewhat unexpectedly, when Bromley defeated them in the 5th Qualifying Round replay. On the previous Saturday, the Town effected a draw away, but on this occasion Bromley had the services of several of their more notable players who have joined the forces, and unquestionably, the better team won.

The Town showed excellent promise in the opening stages of the game, with G.I. Fox, on the left wing, making a fine start, and easily beating the opposing goal-keeper. After Bromley had equalised, the same player again secured the lead for the Town with a splendid individual effor, but the visitors continued to persevere and eventually crossed over at hal-time with a one goal lead. They continued their winning way in the second period, the final score 5 goals to 2 in their favour."

Plumstead were the next visitors to the Avenue Ground in what should have been a London Senior Cup 4th Round tie. However, they were only able to call on part of their team and under the circumstances it was agreed to play the match as a friendly, with each side fielding nine men, and the Town lending their opponents a player. A not altogether unintersting game ensued, but Hampstead showed superiority, eventually winning 5-3.

The cup-tie was played a week later at the Avenue, on Boxing Day 1914. Incessant rain had made conditions treacherous, and the gate was considerably affected. Nevertheless, an interesting encounter was witnessed, the Town winning 4-1.

In January 1915, Hampstead Town met Page Green Old Boys in the London Senior Cup 5th Qualifying round. Winyard, the Hampstead custodian, had a fine first half and made brillian saves from Rogers and Williams, the latter eventually scoring just before half-time. Enjoying a better second-half, Hempstead equalised through J. Fearn. Page Green restored their lead via W. Love and went on to win the tie 2-1. Hampstead struggled to field a side for their next match, a friendly against Summerstown and were easily beaten 4-0. However, a fine crowd witnessed a 2-0 win the following week in another friendly against Northwood. G.I Fox struck both goals.

A strong Clapton side visited the Avenue Ground and beat the Town 1-0. Hampstead, in order to field a full side, included a few prominent players from other clubs who had suspended playing. Of these newcomers, G. Christie (outside-right), W. Howell (left-half) and H. King (inside-left) proved valuable acquisitions. The only goal of the game came from a long range effort by centre-forward H. Lloyd which took keeper Winyard by surprise. Shortly afterwards, Hampstead Town's A.W. Humphreys looked certain to equalise, having cleverly beaten his opponents, he either fell, or was brought down in the penalty area. The referee's award of a penalty was hotly contested, and as there appeared to be some doubt in the matter, W.H. Hooper, who was entrusted with the kick, very sportingly placed the ball behind.
