Season 1914/15 (World War One), Part 2

The Town's next game, the English Cup (F.A. Cup) tie vs Yiewsley was to be played at the Avenue ground. Yiewsley had choice of ground for this event, but at considerable expense, the Town, in the interests of their numerous supporters, had arranged for their opponents to come to Cricklewood Lane, where a fine contest would be witnessed. Every credit was due to Yiewsley for the splendid fight they put up against the Town in the tie which resulted in a 2-2 draw. The game was over 700 local followers witness a keen and interesting game. Had the Town take full advantage of their opportunities, they could have won by a large margin.

Notwithstanding that, in the first, as in the second half, Hampstead were constantly on the offensive. Yiewsley opened the scoring, indecision on the part of the Town backs permitting their inside-right, R.W. Warner, to break through and cleverly beat Winyard. The Town were not to be denied, however, and just before the interval, A.W. Humphreys equalised from a fine pass by F.S. Rayner on the right wing. S. Brown, who played a fine game throughout in the Yiewsley goal, saved what appeared to be certain scoring efforts by O. Warren and T. Poltock, but eventually with the ball placed nicely by G. Garlick, J. Schebsman headed into the net and gave the Town the lead. With the result looking certain in their favous, Hampstead relaxed their strenuous efforts and with only a few minutes to go, F.W. Smith, the Yiewsley captain, brought the scores level with a fine shot.

In winning their replayed English Cup tie with Yiewsley at the Avenue ground by three goals to nil, Hampstead Town confirmed the general impressions formed at the previous encounter, that they should be returned the victory. The visitors put up a splendid fight with a slightly improved team, but on this occasion failed to score, although one or two excellent chances came thir way. O. Warren opened the account for the Town, with a finely headed goal from T. Poltock's centre and later increased the score with a goal, the exact prototype of his previous effort, the ball coming nicely to his head, this time from F. Rayner who continues to perform well on the right wing. A.W. Humphreys, operating in fine style throught the game, added the third goal in the second half wiht an excellent shot. The game was witnessed and thoroughly enjoyed by a local crowd of over 800.

Enfield also visited the Avenue Ground in October 1914 and in winning 3-2 became only the second team to beat us that season, although we helped them along the way with an own goal. The local paper reported: "Dale, the Enfield custodian, who gave a clever display throughout, had far more attacks to negotiate than the home goal-keeper. In the early stages of the game, during a period of pressure, the Town's centre-half, J. Schebsman, accidentally opened the Enfield score. This was quickly neutralised, however, for immediately from the kick-off: F. Raynor forced a corner, and placed the ball beautifully for A.W. Humphreys to head into the net. The Town took the lead early in the second portion, O. Warren scoring a fine goal after a clever individual effort. Enfield wore down the opposing defence in the concluding stages, and by the aid of McCormack and Duck, scored twice, in each case after a melee in the goal-mouth."

At Chelmsford on Saturday 31st October, Hampstead Town won 6-0 through goals from A.W. Humphreys (3), O. Warren (2) and L. Fraser, whilst on the same afternoon the reserves were at the Avenue, defeating Kingsway Rovers 7-1 in the Paddington Cup. The local paper reported that a large number of Belgians, who were now residing in the ares, had taken to visiting the Avenue Ground every Saturday, with a cordial invitation having been extended to them by club officials. Hampstead Town had happy recollections of a visit to Ghent the previous year, where they were entertained by the local clubs.

Southall were to the the next visitors to the Avenue in the divisional final of the English (F.A.) Cup. Kick-off was set for 2.30pm, to allow for extra time, if necessary. Southall were at that time rennowned cup fighters and were expected to include many prominent players in their line up. The local press saw the match as follows:

"Hampstead Town confounded the critics and there were many who procreated their early removal from the English (F.A.) Cup cpmetition, by a decisive and well deserved win over Southall last Saturday at the Avenue ground by 3 goals to 1. The Town have made considerable progress in recent years as a senior team, but like all rising organisations, find that the greatest obstacle to overcome is the reputation of their opponents. However, this and previous meritorious performances should once and for all elevate the club from the list of 'possibles' to that of the 'probables'.

"While Southall played well up to their great reputation thoughout, there was no mistake about the Town's superiority. They started and continued with great determination and after the Southall goal and had several narrow escapes, A.W. Humphreys scored with a fine shot. This advantage was neutralised before the interval, Ballard at left-half making a splendid drive through a crowd of players with Winyard unsighted. On resuming, The Town quickly took the lead, G. Garlick putting on the finishing touch to a really clever move by the home forwards. Later on, F. Poltock who had worked for and obtained a clear opening was, as a last resort, heavily founled in the penalty area by a Southall defender, and W.H. Hooper scored from the resultant spot-kick.

"The game continued fast and exciting, Southall making meritorious but vain efforts to score, Winyard in goal and Hopper and Hornbury, the Town backs, negotiating a good deal of work in satisfactory style. Southall were not balanced - that is it is hard to single out any member of their team for special mention. The Town were fortunate in having the assistance of two of their old and tried members, E.J. Wright (centre-half) and G. Garlick (outside-left), who both had an afternoon's leave from military training. The attendance was well over 1,000.

"A letter sent home to Hampstead Town from a gunner in the Royal Field Artililery referred to a meeting on the Western Front with a couple of local lads, one of whom was O.F. "Okay" Neale (former Hampstead Town centre-forward). They had just come from Antwerp in Velgium, apparently travelling on a fleet of Omnibuses. Two of these had been blown up by enemy gunfire and another one that they'd been on had seen it's staircase blown right off."
