Hendon was formed in 1908/09 as Christ Church Hampstead (see The founding of Hendon FC), and entered into the Finchley & District League's third division. However, results are proving hard to find - the Finchley Press of 18 September 1908 mentions the league and some clubs, but it appears as if the season had still not started, we have to wait until November 20 to find the results from games played on November 14. No result for Christ Church Hampstead, but in the fixture list for the following day we see, at last: Christ Church Hampstead v Caledonian Old Boys. The result 0-0, was printed in the paper a week later (27/11/08).
That was not the club's first game though - that fixture is still elusive - because the first league table, as seen below, takes in games played on 28th November, only a week after that game, and shows Christ Church Hampstead in second place having played four games and so the 0-0 was probably our third league game. That League table was issued on 4th December and showed us in second place and the only unbeaten side, having played only 4 games.

The first game that we can account for, however, isn't our league game against Caledonian Old Boys, but is a Middlesex County F.A. Junior Cup tie played at home on Saturday 26th September against St. Gabriels. We lost that game 4-0.

... but games were also scheduled for Dec 12 (Old Grovians, away) and March 27 (Pakeman Old Boys, away). Results for these two games still evade us, as as do all rhe others for that season. One more result that we do know though is a friendly played on Saturday 13th March 1909. It ended Christ Church Hampstead 6, Hendon Crescent 0.
We finished our first ever season in the Finchley & District League as champions of the third division, the final table at the end of 1908/09 looked like this:

The Finchley & District League was founded in 1898, and it's presentation evening in 1909 was in the form of a concert at Stanley Hall in Junction Road. A.Roston Bourke of the London FA took the chair and presided over the evening. V.J. Woodward of Tottenham Hotspur FC arrived later to a raptuorous standing ovation. The Finchley Press covered the event:
"Frank J. Lunnon kicked-off with a piano-forte solo and from then until the interval, at half past ten, the ball was kept well in play, although many goals were scored. None of the artistes were at all off side, there were no penalties awarded (unless one looks upon encores as such - the audience didn't) but once or twice as the programme proceeded, one or two of the audience got a little off side, and had to be called to order by the referee, but this was due to nothing more than their excessive enthusiasm."
The paper went on to describe other acts in similar style and also stated that the league had 35 clubs in membership with 760 players, who had played a total of 246 games, nearly all of which had been close, and that in division three, Christchurch, Hampstead, scored 25 points against Caledonians 23.
