Ask Dave
Dave Anderson has answered the questions which you posted during the last week, and the answers to each question can now be found below.

(Note that some people asked the same questions, so the phrasing of your question may have changed)
1) What's your opinion of the decision to increase the size of the league to 24 teams next season?

I'm not against it, although having said that we do already play enough football. The league has scrapped the Full Members Cup, but you rarely played 4 games in that, if you did, you had probably got to the final. It's about not getting relegated initially and ensuring we avoid those four relegation spots.
2) Would Dave and the team appreciate more vocal support from the terraces, i.e. more singing and chanting as opposed to just cheering and clapping the players which you see now.

Yes. The support has been very good this season, and it is appreciated by the players. However, we can always do with more. More people equals more noise, and yes it would be great to hear songs and chants.
3) Our recent lift up the table has been nice but we cannot forget that we have been down near the bottom as well, proving that realistically, Hendon could forseeably go down in the future. Hand on heart, can you ever see Hendon going up and playing in the Conference at least? Are you the man to take us there?

The first job each season is to avoid relegation. As for reaching the Conference, we wouldn't get up there on the existing budget. Am I the man to take us there? I believe that I have the experience having been at the top of the table with Aylesbury and Enfield. Also my staff have experience. Warren Kelly won the league when he was with Hayes, while Jon Turner won the FA Vase when he was at Yeading. However, as always in football these days, money talks.
4) Where would you like to see the club in five years time?

I'd like to think that we will be a regular top six side because then the club becomes aware of whats required to move on to the Conference. However, the first step is a regular top ten finish.
5) If you don't mind me asking, what's the average salary a Hendon player would get paid?

That is an unfair question, and one that even the players don't ask. However, it is around one third of what a Canvey Island player gets.
6) What was your opinion of the incident at the St Albans game regarding the can being thrown and as a result don't you think that we should have more stewards. Also in a non-segregated ground are we liable for any incident regarding the behaviour of the crowd whether away fans or not?

This is not really a question I can answer, its an issue for the club officials to deal with. However, its nice to hear that some football supporters can afford to throw their beer away.
7) McCann or Hook? I prefer McCann, not only because he is younger, but also he only lost his place because he was hurst and never had a chance to win it back.

No decision has been made yet. The two players concerned will be informed before any other players or supporters are told. It is one of those decisions that every football manager dreads making.
8) New faces for 2002-3? I reckon we don't need much. One more centre-back in case of a couple of injuries and a big man up front who will score 20+ goals.

Two good points. The big man up front is something we need. We have the youth, pace and experience, we are just missing that big front man that every manager desires. I have lined up four or five possible signings for the summer. We may sign just one or two, we may sign all five, it all depends on how discussions go.
9) What is the news on Warren Kelly and Iain Duncan? I saw Duncan had 45 minutes a couple of weeks ago; will he be in the first team this season? Will Warren play again?

Warren will do pre-season before making a final decision as to his future as a player. Iain was due to play another 45 minutes for the reserves this afternoon at Maidenhead, and he will also be doing pre-season.
10) Are there any plans for any big clubs to visit Hendon in pre-season friendlies?

I am currently just beginning to put the pre-season programme together. It does depend on what the club decides to do with the pitch during the summer, but I hope to end the pre-season campaign with a big friendly if at all possible.
11) What are your plans for next season?

To keep the bulk of the squad we have at the moment with the addition of up to four or five players and to start next season how we are finishing this season.
12) Only a few matches left this season but how do you feel it has gone teamwise? Also your views on how you would sum up your first year as team manager.

Since Christmas it has been very good. The players signed at the back end of last year have made a big impact. It has been a hard decision to release players but I think the right decisions have been made. I thought we were going to start better than we did, so surgery had to be made as the season progressed. It has certainly been a learning process for me, and I have drawn on all the 12 years of experience I have had as a coach in this league. My staff have also played a big part in the progress we have made this season.
13) I have noticed an incredible amount of potential with our current playing squad and you are definitely moving the club forward. However, do you think the state of our home pitch is hampering our chances of progressing to the "top six" level we are aiming for in the next couple of seasons?

The simple answer is yes. You can be sure that everyone at the club realises that something needs to be done. However, it is one thing knowing that, it is another thing finding the money to pay for it.
14) Which players will definitely be with the club next season?

Virtually all of the current squad will be here next season with the exception of one or two that I have yet to make my mind up about.
