Match Report

Hendon completed a four-day double when they travelled to Witham and beat their hosts 2-1 on Tuesday night. It was a bitterly cold evening but the result brought a warm glow to Hendon fans as the team moved to within four points of third-placed Dulwich Hamlet and still with four games in hand.

Oliver Sprague came into the team at the expense of James Fisher, but the formation was rejigged. It was the only change to the starting 11, but Scott Cousins - and Fisher - were named as substitutes without being used (goalkeeper Dan McNicholas was the man omitted from the 16 from the squad which had won on Saturday).

Hendon could hardly have made a better start. The match was just over a minute old when Aaron Morgan drilled the ball and it came off the ankle of Connor Mead before beating the wrong-footed Martyn Guest to give the Greens an early lead.

Despite the great opening, Hendon failed to build on it and it was not long before all of the defending was been done by the visitors. All to often when the Greens tried to relieve the pressure the ball forward was wayward, giving Witham possession back and piling on the workload of the rearguard.

Eventually this pressure had to tell and in the 31st minute, Witham drew level. Mead crossed the ball into the danger area. The ball bounced around inside the penalty box before landing at the feet of Danny Emmanuel, whose shot took a deflection before beating Ben McNamara.

After the goal, Hendon improved slightly, but not enough for the Greens' management team, who made two changes at the interval. On came Leon Smith and Peter Dean; off went Andre Da Costa and Tony Taggart.

The substitutions certainly had the desired effect because Hendon looked a lot better in the second half. They were still not as fluent as they would have liked, and had to defend a number of corners and free-kicks in their defensive, but they were more than capable of keeping the Witham front men at bay, Charlie Goode and Elliott Brathwaite to the fore, ably assisted by the protection of Casey Maclaren in front of the them, McNamara behind and Dave Diedhiou and Sprague outside.

Hendon's winner came with 15 minutes of normal time remaining. The move started with Diedhiou, who passed neatly to Dean.

One substitute found another, Smith working himself an opening. He spotted Morgan in space and passed to him. After taking a touch to control the ball and steady himself, Morgan slammed the ball past Guest.

The goal knocked a bit of the stuffing out of Witham, who had gone into the game with four changes from Saturday, two enforced by injury, two at the manager's will. They did have a couple of half-chances, but they came to nothing and it was the Hendon players who left the field with smiles on their faces.
